From First Lady to the Presidency? Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner Elected President in Argentina

On Sunday October 28, 2007 the Argentine first lady Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner made history as she declared victory in the Presidential election. Fernandez de Kirchner has been a top adviser to her husband President Nestor Kirchner during his four years in office and serves in the country's Senate. President Nestor Kirchner, who is credited with Argentina's rebound from a 2001 economic collapse will be switching roles with his wife on December 10 when she officially begins her 4 year term as president. Her husband will become her leading advisor once she takes office. During the campaign, she promised to continue his economic policies. Fernandez de Kirchner called her victory "a triumph for all Argentines" and thanked supporters for entrusting her with the "major responsibility" of the presidency.

It is hard not to compare Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner with Hillary Clinton for both were powerful first ladies who helped their husbands rise to presidency. They are also coincidentaly both lawyers and senators.

This news give great hope to Hillary supporters that a former U.S. first lady can too rise to presidency.

Patti Solis Doyle Featured in November Issue of Latina Magazine

The name Patti Solis Doyle is rapidly becoming familiar in our community. She was featured in the November issue of "Latina Magazine" for her leadership, as the first Latina to ever run a presidential campaign. The article details her story which relates to so many of ours, for her father immigrated to this country three times in order to provide a future for his family. Patti's parents struggled to give their children a good education and it paid off. She attended Northwestern University on a merit scholarship where she studied communications. Like many recent graduates she took opportunities as they came. She was hired 16 years ago as a scheduler for Hillary (during Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign)and is now described as Senator Clinton's "single most important political adviser". Patti's loyalty to Hillary has led her to make history on Capitol Hill.

As a young Latina professional, Patti inspires me to follow my dreams and to work hard even if I have to start from the bottom to get to the top. She also opened my eyes to the importance of behind-the-scenes leaders. Although Patti sometimes makes appearances for the campaign her main responsibility is to manage about 250 people and millions of dollars in funds.

Her role in this presidential campaign is highly important to our community because she knows what issues affect us and can properly relate them to Hillary. The article also points out that Patti keeps a close eye on Hillary's National Hispanic outreach team - the first of it's kind .

The piece ends with Patti advising readers to make ourselves valuable, to get involved, stay focused and be loyal.

Teleconference Summary on Higher Education Accessibility for Latinos

On Thursday October 11, 2007 Latino supporters from across the nation called in to speak with Congressman Rubén Hinojosa and the Hillary Clinton for President Policy Team to speak about college accessibility for all Latinos. The call was in reference to Hillary's economic plan which she had announced earlier in the week.

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa introduced himself and talked about his work as Chair for the Subcommittee on Higher Education and how he has been a longtime advocate for increasing educational opportunities for Hispanics. He also talked about his interaction with Hillary and how he believes that she has the experience and leadership to bring about change as President. He then touched upon his work with the Higher Education Reauthorization Act.

Crystal Patterson from the Hillary Policy Team talked about Hillary's plan which included:
  • Lowering the cost of college through a $3,500 tuition tax credit, enough to cover more than 50% of the cost of tuition at the average public institution for many families.
  • Increasing the Pell Grant.
  • Strengthening community colleges and training programs.
  • Improving college graduation rates.
  • Providing additional aid for people who do public service.
  • Simplifying student aid.
  • Enact a student borrowers’ bill of rights to ensure that loan payments are reasonable.
  • Providing clear information about the real cost of college well in advance to help families plan.
  • Work to increase funding for work-study and other federal financial aid and cut student loan interest rates.

Callers where then able to ask questions. Most questions had to do with FAFSA form and ways to improve its function. Overall the teleconference was informative and productive. i encourge everyone to take the opportunity to listen in on conversations wbout issues that interest you and your family.

An Evening with Patti Solis Doyle, Campaign Manager for Hillary Clinton for President

As many of you know Hillary’s Campaign Manager Patti Solis Doyle, is the first Latina to ever run a Presidential campaign. She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and has been able to achieve her American dream by doing something that she truly loves. After college, Patti became Hillary’s personal assistant and scheduler and later went on to become a trusted adviser to President Bill Clinton. She is a perfect example of a hard working Latina that was able to achieve her career goals. Having her hold this position has been very beneficial to our community because Patti is able to express our needs and issues on a personal level to Hillary.

The DC Area Students for Hillary, the Organization of Latino American Students at George Washington, and the George Washington College Democrats invite you to An Evening with Patti Solis Doyle at George Washington University The Elliot School of International Affairs 1957 E Street NW Room 113 on Tuesday October 16, 2007 at 6PM, (doors open at 5:30PM).

College Accessibility For All Latinos

Do you care about your children’s college education? Well Hillary sure does! As part of her campaign efforts the Hillary Policy Team along with Congressman Hinojosa, Chair for the Subcommittee on Higher Education will have an intimate discussion on how access to college impacts our Latino community. And your invited to join in on the teleconference.

Hillary has made a firm commitment to make college affordable for all when she is President. She will end the work penalty that discounts students’ financial aid packages by as much as 50 percent for each dollar they earn; increase the Pell Grant maximum so that it keeps pace with the rising cost of college; and enact a student borrowers’ bill of rights to ensure that loan payments are reasonable. And Hillary will work to increase funding for work-study and other federal financial aid and cut student loan interest rates.

Hillary attends CHCI Presidential Forum

Hillary has been doing an outstanding job at addressing the issues that affect our Latino Community. She has not only attended the Annual Conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, the National Council of La Raza’s Annual Conference, and the Univision Presidential Forum, but she has also been receiving the endorsement of high-profile Latino elected officials and community leaders from across the country.

I had the opportunity to see Hillary in person this past Wednesday October 3, at Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institutes’ 2007 Presidential Forum along with Senator Biden, Rep. Dennis Kucinich and former Sen. Mike Gravel. Six Hispanic members of Congress presented one question each to the candidates, who then had 15 minutes to speak and address the questions. The topics included education, health care, immigration, as well as health care for veterans.

As usual Hillary stood out! Her answers were concise and thoroughly thought out. She started out by talking about her campaign manager, first-generation Mexican-American Patti Solis Doyle. Hillary stressed the importance of education. The crowd roared when she set the goal to cut the high school dropout rate for Hispanics in half if she is elected president.-

She was the only candidate that received a standing ovation from the crowd. It was evident that five of the six Hispanic Democrats who posed questions to the candidates endorsed Clinton’s candidacy because before she got off stage they went over and greeted her with a hug. They were Reps. Nydia Velázquez (N.Y.), Lucille Roybal-Allard (Calif.), Grace Napolitano (Calif.), Henry Cuellar (Texas) and Rubén Hinojosa (Texas).
