In 2008, Latinos played an invaluable role in electing Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America. The Latino community across the country was an integral part of the massive grassroots movement that changed the course of our nation's history.

The CasaBlanca Project and Latino Inaugural Celebration Committee formally invites you to celebrate the Latino community's participation in the U.S. presidential election! The event will take place at the Hall of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS) world headquarters in the heart of Washington's national monument district on the evening of Monday, January 19th, 2009. The celebration is being organized by representatives from national and local community based organizations, former campaign organizers, as well as the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), The CasaBlanca Project and Latinas Unidas for Obama. Don't miss out on the premier Inaugural Event of Inaugural Week and join us for an evening to celebrate the significant impact of the Latino vote, the new change in U.S. politics, and the grassroots movement that brought this change about.

Responsible Tax Cuts For Ordinary Americans

Barack Obama’s tax plan delivers broad-based tax relief to middle class families and cuts taxes for small businesses and companies that create jobs in America, while restoring fairness to our tax code and returning to fiscal responsibility. Coupled with Obama’s commitment to invest in key areas like health, clean energy, innovation and education, his tax plan will help restore bottom-up economic growth that helps create good jobs in America and empowers all families achieve the American dream.

Under the Obama Plan:
-Middle class families will see their taxes cut – and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the Obama plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20% lower than they faced under President Reagan. According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan.

-Families making more than $250,000 will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990s. Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility. But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s. In fact, dividend rates would be 39 percent lower than what President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut.

-Obama’s plan will cut taxes overall, reducing revenues to below the levels that prevailed under Ronald Reagan (less than 18.2 percent of GDP). The Obama tax plan is a net tax cut – his tax relief for middle class families is larger than the revenue raised by his tax changes for families over $250,000. Coupled with his commitment to cut unnecessary spending, Obama will pay for this tax relief while bringing down the budget deficit.

In one of her biggest momentums with the latino community, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton embraced the island of Puerto Rico as one of her aims to strengthen her candidacy in order to reassure her nomination for the democratic party. The “wonder woman” as she is usually called in the “island of charm” (la isla del encanto), appeared in direct contact with the people of Puerto Rico where she exhausted an intense schedule of interviews and speeches. Surrounded by a full congregation at the Pabellon de la Victoria evangelical church, she delivered a powerful testimony of her faith, strength and determination to stay in the presidential race. "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it," she says to the crowd. "And this is a church that rejoices."

Hillary Clinton ended a three day campaign swing across Puerto Rico in which she observed Memorial Day, paying tribute to U.S. military men and women from the past and the present and making her case for becoming commander in chief. She stood at an official ceremony outside the capitol building in San Juan. By her side stood her daughter Chelsea and her husband the former president. Clinton’s entire message was focused on the need to give Puerto Ricans the right to vote, especially in light of the service they provide and have provided to our country.

Traditionally, Puerto Ricans have both served in the Armed Forces and died in combat in numbers disproportionate to their share of the population. So it rankles many on the island that, even as their sons and daughters are serving with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan, they do not enjoy all of the same rights and privileges of citizenship as other Americans.

Senator Clinton, who enjoys a high level of popularity abroad has been greeted so enthusiastically in Puerto Rico to the point of being venerated by puertoricans and other caribbean latinos including dominicans and cubans. Clinton enjoyed a short but seemingly reinvigorating trip, likely one of the last of her campaign. At Sabor Latino Bar in San Juan, some of her supporters handed her a Presidente beer, and with the sounds of Enrique Iglesias' "Be With You" in the background, Senator Clinton danced with a reporter, closing her eyes and nodding her head, before patting him on the shoulder and moving ahead. The day after, Hillary Clinton appeared in the front page of all the major newspapers of the Dominican Republic drinking the famous dominican beer being considered by the locals as a very good omen in top of the warm gesture of appreciation of support to one of her favorite vacation spots.

The results of the Democrats Abroad primary paint a fascinating picture of the geographical distribution of support for Hillary Clinton. Senator Clinton was the victor in the Dominican Republic where she did get a whopping 90.3 of the vote. Democrats Abroad holds 4 superdelegate votes. A total of 22 delegates, each with a half vote, will attend the Convention.

“Of the two Democratic campaigners, Senator Clinton’s more policy-oriented stump speeches seem to have hit more of the right notes with Hispanic voters. According to an analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center, the results in California, Texas and New Mexico would have been different had Latinos not voted in such large numbers and for the New York senator. Mrs. Clinton won by carrying the Hispanic vote by a margin of about two-to-one against Sen. Barack Obama in all three states.” “What seems clear is that if the campaigns want to sing their way into Hispanic hearts this election year, they need to carry a tune of opportunity.”, the New York Times stated back in March, after the Texas primary.

The Latino Vote Helps Hillary Clinton

According to the BBC News article entitled “US Latino voters come of age” published on May 2, 2008, the article stated that “in recent months, Latinos have also played a pivotal role in helping the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton stay in the race against her rival Barack Obama, contributing to her impressive victory in California on Super Tuesday and playing a major role in her victory a month later in Texas.” Why is this? I believe it is because Latinos trust Hillary Clinton when she says she will work hard to bring real solutions for the United States of America. Also, because Latinos want a real Health Care solution and they want a real solution to the failing economy.

Latino voters have overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic Party Primaries and Caucuses. The BBC News article “US Latino voters come of age” also stated that in both California and Texas, “Latinos voted in much higher numbers in the Democratic primaries, with two-thirds of them voting for Mrs. Clinton.” Why is this? I believe it is because Latinos trust Hillary Clinton when she says she will bring real solutions to America’s problems. Latinos want a real solution to education – No Child Left Behind is not a real solution and Hillary Clinton has vowed to find a real solution for education and to do away with unfunded federal mandates such as No Child Left Behind. Latinos have responded to Hillary Clinton’s message of real leadership.

Latinos will continue to be a force in U.S. politics in the future because the Latino population is growing dramatically in the U.S. and Latinos have seen the results of their political power. According to the BBC News article entitled “US Latino voters come of age,” the article stated that “In California alone, for example, more than 1.2 million Latinos who voted in the Super Tuesday primary – a close to 300% increase on the same number who voted in the last Democratic primaries in 2004.” Therefore, the impressive Latino impact on U.S. politics will continue to grow.

FL Latinos Protest at National Democratic Party Headquarters

According to the News Service Washington Bureau about 250 Floridians – most of them Latino rallyed outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters today to express their concern about their vote not being counted.

The national party decided last year to strip the state of any delegates because it violated party rules by moving up its primary date. Thr Obama campaign says publicly that anything other than completely eliminating Clinton's advantage – in other words, splitting the delegates evenly between the two -- is unfair. He contends the Florida primary wasn't fair because the candidates, even though they were on the ballot, didn't campaign here.

Although many of the demonstrators were Hillary supporters they were there to target a larger issue. “This is our heritage!” said de Anita Palma past Florida director of the League of United Latin American Citizens , referring to the right to vote and have that vote count. “Our forefathers fought for it, our father’s fought for it, and I’ll be damned if we are going to let it get away from us now!”

Wasserman Schultz, a national Clinton campaign co-chairwoman suggested that disregarding the Jan. 29 primary ballot choices of 1.7 million Florida Democratic primary voters could alienate these voters in a key presidential swing-state.

Hillary Wins PA Primary

Hillary's win in PA could not have been summed up any better! After all her trials and tribulations she prevailed and will continue to show Americans that she is the right candidate for President.

Clinton's win adds to those in other big states, like Ohio, New York and California and, according to her campaign, should revive questions about whether Obama can beat presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in November.

Neither candidate is expected to win the 2,025 delegates needed to clinch the nomination by the end of the primary season in June, pushing the decision down to the wire.

On Monday April 21, Latinos for Clinton came together to support Hillary before the Pennsylvania primaries. Despite the rainy weather supporters enjoyed Latin/ Mediterranean fused appetizers and drinks and LIMA Restaurant and Lounge. The event opened with the spectacular ballads of Juan Carlos Molina, a Guatemalan native with Colombian background who recently released a CD called Sueños with 16 tracks of Ricardo Arjona. After that, Alicia Menendez (daughter of Senator Bob Menendez of NJ), political activist and freelance writer grabbed to mic and ensured us that Hillary is still in this race and has potential for victory! Our key note speaker for the night Ana Sol Gutierrez gave a motivational speech about Hillary and the importance of the Latino Vote! Her last words were to DONATE DONATE DONATE! The night ended with a wonderful performance by Renato Cruz a local artist that blew us away with his Salsa performance. Overall the fundraiser was a success, hundreds were raised and supporters were confident about Hillary's future victory in Pennsylvania.

Latinos Are Making A Difference

According to the Politico "Latinos More Likely to be Colorblind" article yesterday states that "Hispanics, the fastest-growing segment of the electorate, are expected to break their own turnout records and vote for the Democratic nominee — whether it is Clinton or Obama".

Hispanics, also known as the sleeping giant when referring to their participation in the election process, are fed up with the Republican conservative rhetoric. The debate against illegal immigration, the failing economy and expensive health care is motivating Latinos to vote in unprecedented numbers.

More than three-fourths of the Latino voters — 78 percent — voted in Democratic rather than Republican primaries. Rep. Hilda L. Solis (D-Calif.), who is vigorously campaigning for Clinton, predicted the Latino voter turnout in November would continue to increase, regardless of who wins the nomination.

We are becoming educated in our electoral process and understand that in order to fix our economy, bring an end to the Iraq war and fix our mortgage crisis, we must take an active role in electing a president that will be qualified to fix these problems.

The article points out that Latinos of all ages and economic and education levels have backed Clinton by strong majorities in the primaries to date. The margin has been even higher among women and Spanish-dominant Hispanic immigrants who remember that former President Clinton presided over good economic times.

Hillary Clinton’s gender is a motivating factor for Latinas who “understand that, as they get out of college and face a career, they will face the same barriers that she is facing,” Solis said. When Latinas perceived that Clinton was being attacked because of her gender, “it actually pushed more Latinas her way,” the congresswoman added.

I grew up in a very modest home near Puerto Rico's Rio Limon. My family didn't have much, but I had a great role model - my mother. To make ends meet she sold pasteles, a traditional Puerto Rican food, to the workers in the sugar cane fields. It was difficult work considering she was also raising nine children, but she never complained. Because of her tireless efforts, I was able to get a good education and go on to be the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Today, I serve the residents of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan's Lower East Side with the same humility, resolve and unwavering sense of commitment that I learned from my mother. In fact, those qualities define my work as a public official, and they are the lens through which I judge our Presidential candidates.

That is exactly why I support Hillary. She is an experienced leader who is committed to working on our behalf. She has the ability to show every American that there are no constraints strong enough to keep us from achieving our dreams. And, just as importantly, she understands that our history is written in the selfless actions of people like my mother. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we should remember those facts, and use the lessons we have learned to make the best choice in this election.

Approving the island's switch from caucus to a primary has placed pressure on both candidates to visit the island. Hillary's Presidential campaign is already planning out campaign efforts in Puerto Rico. According to Former President Bill Clinton will visit PR next month to campaign for his wife. Several events for him are planned from April 6-7. Although Puerto Rico does not have as many delegates as the other three remaining states, the Clinton family is determined to visit as many places in PR as possible.

June 1 will mark a historic opportunity for Latinos to influence U.S. politics. If you have family in the island encourage them to get involved and vote CLINTON!

I am Beatriz Mallory, the new Pennsylvania State Director of Latinos for Clinton. In my work as CEO of my advertising agency, HispanAmérica, I spend my days building relationships between our clients and our community. I am proud to bring these capabilities to Latinos for Clinton, and to get Hillary elected as Presidente de los Estados Unidos de América.

Hillary’s roots run particularly deep here in PA. I’m writing this note merely 35 miles from the Rodham family’s cottage at Lake Winola, 17 miles north of Scranton. Every August, her father Hugh Rodham packed Hillary and the family into their Lincoln and drove from Chicago to the lake for two weeks. In between her afternoons reading on the dock, here is where Hillary learned to shoot a gun, to fish, to swim and to understand the true value of family, friends and community.

And PA loves Hillary. Her deep understanding of the tough, paycheck-to-paycheck life so many live here in what was coal country. Her profound commitment to children, their health and wellbeing, and their futures. Her fierce dedication to issues that matter so much here in northeast PA – a decent job at a decent wage, with healthcare benefits that enable parents to provide for and protect their families.

There simply is no better choice for Latinos in Pennsylvania. Hillary has an ambitious, yet attainable program for raising our community up to the level playing field – la “cancha común” – where we can succeed on equal terms. From fair immigration reform, to educational opportunity for all of us; from affordable housing to healthcare for all of us; Hillary proveerá una vida mejor para todos.

Finally, we need her guts, fearlessness, experience and good judgment to confront terrorism and bring a sensible end to the war in Iraq in which we are losing so many of our best – amigos, padres, hermanas, hijos. Sin duda, Hillary is the right woman for us, and for our times.

I have supported Hillary financially for 3 years now. But now, I’m rolling up my sleeves, contributing my time and effort, while continuing to click the “contribute now” links. As the all-important April 22nd primary approaches, we will need all the help we can get to put Hillary over the top in both votes and delegates. PA will go to Clinton, but only if we all pitch in to get out the 260,000 votes we know are here.

The Clinton Campaign and Puerto Rican Status

According to the New York Observer "The Clinton Campaign and Puerto Rican Status" article yesterday as the Puerto Rico Primary approaches certain issues are a concern among the citizens of the "isla del encanto". At the top of the list is the status issue. Sen. Hillary Clinton recognizes the honored, sacrifices and great contributions that the puertorricans had given the United States over the centuries including more recently the war on Iraq and Afghanistan. In her agenda she proposes as President from Day One, to make it a personal priority to work with all factions advocates of the present status of commonwealth, statehood, independence, and national sovereignty in free association with the U.A..without a preference among the options to enable the question of status to finally be resolved during her first term.

Also her agenda points out the same access to affordable Health Care as in the United Sates, the Assistance with Economic Activity providing new tax benefits for job-creation to narrow down the income gap between Puerto Rico and the States. Domestic Manufacturing Tax Deduction, Equal Treatment of workers as in the mainland are also included in the economic busting plan.

Another important issue on her agenda is the Restoration of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) together with a more comprehensive judicial restructuring and funding in order to improve and support crime fighting activities in the island which is a crucial issue among all citizens.

One of the most primal issues on her agenda is the Returning of the Land to the People in Vieques and Culebra which is been under federal appropriation for more than 40 years and finally but not least important the Treatment of Puerto Rico Equally in Federal Data Collection which will improve federal funding for programs that can affect nation wide business decisions and budget funding.
